º¯½ÂÈÆ BYUN, SEUNG HOON
2006.1.3 - 1.31
Tong-In Gallery New York
Taking over the tradition of Korean ceramics, Byun Seung-Hoon has stretched the boundaries of his ceramic art through his Buncheong ware and breathed modern men¡¯s sensibilities into his work. Byun has been for long years absorbed in creating works empty and thus possible to hold everything. Through his ceramics, Byun strives to explore the cycles of destruction and renewal in all existing things, rather than focusing merely on the portrayal of their outward appearance. Korean Buncheong ware whose beauty and artistic quality seems distinctively pristine and humble is an ideal ceramic form to showcase the purity and natural beauty of the earth itself. Extending the domain of his work through the huge-scale Buncheong ceramic murals for catholic churches and Buddhist temples, Byun had an opportunity to fill in such vast places with the warmth of clay to the full. Seemingly coarse, unintentional and spontaneous in its modeling quality, Byun¡¯s ceramics convey a sense of familiarity in its blank space. Mostly balanced and geometrically proportional in its contour, Byun¡¯s work on display at the show distinctively demonstrates scratch-like patterns in layers in an unrestrained mood. By putting tiny ceramic pieces together he completes a huge-scale mural, thereby creating a feeling of the universe and new natural space. Byun Seung-Hoon was born in 1955 and graduated from Hongik University with a BFA in crafts. Since 1988, Byun presented his works to approximately 17 one-man exhibitions and a number of group shows. Now active in Ansong, Gyeonggi province, Byon created several ceramic murals for the Daewha cathedral in Gangwon province, St. John catholic church in Gyeonggi province, and Gilsangsa temple in Seoul. 1988³â ù °³ÀÎÀüÀ» °è±â·Î ¼ö¾øÀÌ ±×¸©À» ºú¾ú´ø º¯½ÂÈÆÀº ÀÌÈÄ¿¡µµ ÇÑÂü µ¿¾È ¹«¾ùÀΰ¡¸¦ '´ã±â À§ÇÑ' ÀÛÇ°À» ¸¸µå´Âµ¥ Àü³äÇß´Ù. ¸»ÇÏÀÚ¸é ¹«¾ùÀ̵ç ä¿ï ¼ö ÀÖµµ·Ï ºñ¾îÀÖ´Â ÀÛÇ°À» ¼±º¸ÀÌ°íÀÚ Çß´ø °ÍÀÌ´Ù.
