Beauty of the Korean Color
2005.11.1 - 11.30
ÅëÀ맨å°Ö·¯¸®
Tongin Gallery New York will put on display a group of traditional patchwork wrapping cloths, or jogakbo and traditional color paper craftworks, showcasing the Korea¡¯s traditional beauty of life and its aesthetic. Korean people, based especially on their interest in beautifully decorating their living space, have developed this paper craft(five-colored paper craft). This paper art most abundantly flourished in the Joseon era and its artifacts were varying in shape and purpose. All its elements such as line, form and color are palpably in accord, eloquently showing practicality, embellishment and aesthetic. Patchwork wrapping cloths, made by finely stitching together small pieces of fabric, demonstrate the life wisdom of Koreans and simultaneously artistic talent in their elegantly harmonized colors. They were used not only for wrapping but for covering, storing, and carrying precious things, allowing people to express their best wishes for the recipients¡¯ good luck and happiness. The intricate composition of five-colored paper crafts and patchwork wrapping cloths is today more highly regarded and stands comparison favorably with that of Mondrian¡¯s or Klee¡¯s. Unlike their paintings done after sufficiently considering the harmony and order of colors, such traditional Korean craftworks remain more liberal and pure in their color formation. In terms of both practicality and artistic quality, the prominence of these artifacts proves that Korean people and their ancestors were enormously outstanding in their aesthetic sense. The exhibit will be a valuable showcase for Koreans¡¯ aesthetic, their sense of space and color. ´º¿å ÅëÀÎȶû¿¡¼ Çѱ¹°íÀ¯ÀÇ ¹®¾ç°ú »öÀÇ ¾Æ¸§´Ù¿òÀ» °¨»óÇÒ ¼ö ÀÖ´Â Àü½Ãȸ¸¦ ¿¬´Ù.
